Pencil and Paper Modes

You may switch between pen and pencil modes while playing the crossword. The pencil icon can be used to switch between the app and online methods.   

  • Gray letters are entered in pencil mode, while black letters are entered in the default pen mode.
  • To solve in pencil mode, tap the pencil icon (so it’s highlighted).
  • To switch back to the default pen mode, untap the pencil icon.

Letter Colours In the Crossword

The letter colors that appear in The Crossword indicate the following:

Black – Letters entered in the default pen mode.

Gray – Letters entered in pencil mode.

Blue – Letters that have been confirmed with Check.

Using Check/Reveal

Letters that have been disclosed to be inaccurate with Check will be crossed out with a red diagonal line. If you shift from an incorrect letter to a new correct letter, the previously crossed-out letters will turn grey.

A red flag will stay on the square if you use Reveal to find the accurate letter. A clue will turn gray after entering all letters; this applies whether you are right or wrong.

Zoom In and Zoom Out

By grabbing both of your index fingers together on the app display and moving them apart while maintaining contact with the screen, you can expand (zoom in) your puzzle view in the Crossword puzzle app.

Place your thumb and index finger at different places on the screen of the Crossword Puzzles app, then bring them together while keeping in contact with the screen to reduce (zoom out) the crossword view. Keep in mind that after enlarging the puzzle view, you can only reduce it to the size that was displayed on the app initially. The puzzle cannot currently be minimized in size from how it initially appears.
